John F. Kerry, United States Senator from Massachusetts

John Forbes Kerry (born 11 Dec 1943) served as United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1985-2013, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee And as Secretary of State of the United Sates.  He first ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1976.  He was elected to his first term as Senator in 1984, after serving as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts under Governor Michael Dukakis.  During the 2004 presidential election he was portrayed as a staunch liberal by conservative special interest groups and the Bush campaign, who often noted that in 2003 Kerry was rated the National Journal’s top Senate liberal.  However, that rating was based only upon voting on legislation within that past year.  In fact, in terms of career voting records, the National Journal found that Kerry was the 11th most liberal member of the Senate.  Most analyses find that Kerry is at least slightly more liberal than the typical Democratic Senator.  Kerry has stated that he opposes privatizing Social Security, supports abortion rights for adult women and minors, supports same-sex marriage, opposes capital punishment except for terrorists, supports most gun control laws and is generally a supporter of trade agreements.  Kerry was the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2004 presidential election, but in a close election he lost by 35 electoral votes to the incumbent, President George W. Bush, who received 51% of the popular vote.

Following the 2004 election, Kerry remained in the Senate and became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2002.  In 2011 he was appointed to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. Having been nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and then confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 94–3 on 29 Jan 2013, Kerry assumed the office on 1 Feb 2013.
